From 1999 to 2005, Yves Bergeron
was director of the research and evaluation service of the Québec
Museum of Civilization. At present, he is professor of museology
in the Department of Art History of the University of Québec
at Montreal. His article offers a look at the development of ethnographic
museums and museums of society in Canada over the past 40 years.
The author traces the origins of the Québec Museum of Civilization,
which has been a model of reference for museums of society since
1988. He analyzes the factors that allowed this museum to distinguish
itself in the particular context of Québec, the focal point
of French culture in Canada. The similarities between Québec
and Catalonia allow us to understand the elements at play in museums
of small nations in the context of globalization. |
