| The aim of this article is
to explore the emergence and development of contemporary dongba
art in the Naxi society of Lijiang (People’s Republic of China).
The category “contemporary dongba art”, which first
appeared at the beginning of the 1980s, is a local classification
designating contemporary art objects that incorporate formal or
iconographic elements from traditional Naxi material culture. The
main feature of these new art objects are the pictographs used by
dongba priests in their ritual books.
In order to understand the social meaning of contemporary dongba
art objects, this article analyzes the relationship between its
emergence and efforts to recover traditional Naxi culture undertaken
after the Cultural Revolution, the transformation of the dongba
notion, and the social uses of dongba art objects in the urban context
of contemporary Lijiang, a city deeply influenced by the rise of
tourism. |
